Poland canceled the visit of an official Israeli delegation to Warsaw Monday which planned to discuss the restoring Jewish property stolen from Polish Jews during the Holocaust, a contentious issue between the two countries.

"Poland decided to cancel the visit of Israeli officials after the Israeli side made last minute changes in the composition of the delegation suggesting that the talks would primarily focus on the issues related to property restitution," the Polish Foreign Ministry said.

Leaders of the Claims Conference and the World Jewish Restitution Organization (WJRO) met with the Prime Minister of Poland and the Speaker of the Sejm, the Polish Parliament, to press for legislation on the restitution of private property stolen during the Holocaust.

At the meetings in Warsaw on February 28, Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski committed to legislation by the end of the year, but indicated that compensation will be based on 15 percent of the value of the confiscated property. The Claims Conference and WJRO will be working intensively in an effort to ensure the best possible law be passed and that the program be established rapidly.

A delegation of Israeli officials will head to Poland Monday to discuss restoring Jewish property stolen from Polish Jews during the Holocaust – one of the most contentious and sensitive issues in the relations between the two countries.
